Get the axe

Meaning:

  • If a person gets the axe, they lose their job.
  • If a plan or a service gets the axe, it is stopped.


Example sentence:

Did you hear about John? He got the axe yesterday. It's bad because his wife's expecting a baby. He must find a new job as soon as possible.
