On last legs

 Meaning:

  • If you are on your last legs, you are very tired, especially after a lot of physical activity or work.
  • If a machine is on its last legs, it is in bad condition because it is old and it will probably stop working soon.


Example sentences:

I won't join you tonight; I'm on my last legs.

I've had my car for twenty years and I think it's on its last legs. I'll have to get another one.


Questions for you to answer:

  1. Do you tend to keep things that are on their last legs or do you throw them away?
  2. Would you drive a car that is on its last legs or would you rather walk?
  3. When were you last on your last legs?
